81 Reviewing Our Readiness for Change

We are getting very close to the end of the Second Act. We need to get those last few characters on stage and a few more stage props in place before we bring down the curtains on this act.

By now you have worked on at least four of your Batteries of Change. You need to complete the final audits if you haven’t already and see how charged your context is in relation to your change opportunity.

You have been through the process already so get busy and wrap up your final set of observations.

Just by the way here are some thoughts from Major General Porter about capability and operations. Keep the batteries metaphor in mind as you watch.

  • 1

Start to look for the overall pattern in your Six Batteries of Change audit.

  • 2

Take your time here. For each battery think through your observations and insights. Write up one or two paragraphs about each battery.

  • 3

When you have finished then read each of your paragraphs and develop an overall set of statements that are a summary of your overall observations of the energy of the organization and the energy for change.

Here is a summary overview of the Six Batteries:

Next

Now develop a Battery of Change audit conversation that we want you to share with a trusted advisor or a critical friend.

Share your audit conversation. Listen for insights and write down any additional pieces of wisdom and observations.

Now we want you to go to your Change Opportunity Peer Conversation template; the one you created in Topic 9.    Read your insights so far. Update your template and fill in any blank pieces.

This is a very important part of this unit and of your progress as you begin to do the development work on your change opportunity.

In this crucial Review and Reflect, you have four key actions which are unpacked below. You should allow at least one hour to complete this Review and Reflect.

ACTION ONE

First, we want you to revisit all your notes, observations and insights so far in this unit.    You should plan to spend at least 30 minutes working on this action.

ACTION TWO

Next, we want you to review your Batteries of Change work and complete the Batteries of Change Action Chart.  (You can download and print a copy below.)

Imagine that you have 12 green stickers and you get to allocate them anywhere on the Batteries of Change Action Chart to show which are the most important energy action for your change opportunity.

You can have more than one green sticker on an action. So if you think that there is one that is particularly important you can put up to three on that action.

It should take you about 10 minutes to complete this action.

ACTION THREE

Next we want you to prepare the Change Opportunity Project Planning document.   You will need to download a blank template to work through (see below).

As you work through this exercise, we recommend you use your Change Opportunity Peer Conversation template to help you.  You should have this from Topic 9.  you will find insights there and details that will help you.   Just to remind you, the Change Opportunity Peer Conversation document looks like this:

ACTION FOUR

Now that you have completed all your charts and documents, we want you to set up a time with your mentor or someone who has a very strong knowledge of the function and activities that relate to your change opportunity.

This is essential as you must have a clear line of sight and we don’t want you taking any unnecessary risks or finding yourself in a difficult situation because there is something in the authoring environment that you haven’t foreseen.

All the best!

You are almost ready to complete your @Work 2 activity!

The @Work 2 Primer is your time to prepare all the things, people, situations, permissions and other actions that you need before you start on your @Work 2.

Start with a checklist of all the tools and processes you will need. Go through your various templates, Batteries of Change audits, user maps, empathy maps and any other artifacts.

Do you need copies of anything, note pads, print outs?

Do you permissions, appointments, other resources, access?

Use your mindfulness techniques here just to go over everything to be sure that you are physically and mentally ready for a great experience.

From your templates you have a

              Big Idea!

You know why this is a great change opportunity. You have completed your SCARF, your stakeholder audits and your culture insights work. You have linked your opportunity to your purpose in the Army and the Army’s purpose.

You should also have been back and reviewed your @Work 1.

As a final review, before you take a break, check that you have:

  • Completed the steps and actions that were suggested for you in preparation for this Activity.
  • Ensured that your methodology is in order and you have completed your consultations with any necessary stakeholders.
  • Prepared any approvals or other considerations.
  • You should also have any resources, interview protocols, props and other necessary items in hand and organised so that you can efficiently complete the ‘action’ component of your change opportunity.

You are all set!
