Systems Thinking: What and Why
We introduced the contemporary organisation as one of paradox and duality, rather than as a unified system with a single purpose. We also set out the argument for managers to see the world as complex and interdependent. Systems thinking provides a lens to view challenges holistically, encouraging leaders to identify patterns, interdependencies, and root causes rather than superficial symptoms. By shifting from linear to systemic approaches, managers can foster adaptability and resilience, crucial for navigating complexity.
A Brief History of Systems Thinking
Placing any phenomenon in an historical context helps us gain perspective. Historical insights illuminate how pioneers of this discipline addressed the challenges of the era, and how the discipline can now speak to the issues of both hard and soft systems, and those that are a combination of both.
The Core Paradigms of Critical Systems Thinking and Systems Dynamics
These paradigms highlight the importance of leveraging multiple lenses to tackle complex problems. Critical systems thinking underscores the value of engaging stakeholders with varied perspectives, promoting inclusivity and fairness. Systems dynamics, with its emphasis on feedback loops and causal relationships, equips managers with tools to anticipate consequences and refine interventions over time. Although many theorists in the field may differ, it is useful to integrate both approaches, or apply alternately, to balance analytical rigour with critical and ethical considerations.
An Introduction to the Systemcraft Frame
The Systemcraft (Joyner, 2025) framework provides the scaffold for the book and offers a structured yet flexible guide for managers aiming to operationalise systems thinking in their practice. By focusing on inquiry, framing, and intervention, Systemcraft empowers managers to embrace complexity without becoming paralysed by it. This framework underscores the importance of curiosity and disciplined analysis, allowing leaders to navigate uncertainty with confidence.
