October 2022
Accolade
Congratulations and well done to Sally for receiving a very nice compliment from a research student who is on the right track for formal publishing! The compliment was passed on by James Hughes RN PhD, Lecturer / Academic Advisor.
Night Against Procrastination
The Night Against Procrastination event was held on 25th October to support students with their end of semester enquiries.
A HUGE thank you to Danielle for organizing the event and to Lara for assisting students with their research and referencing enquiries in the Learning Hub space, where QUT Educators were also present to provide students with information on a range of topics from study guidance to wellness, career and advocacy advice. The event was well attended and included presence of therapy dogs, free food and prizes.
Festive Market
How wonderful it is to see the link space between R and E Block on Level 2 being chosen as a venue for the Festive Market Event on 28th October! The event, which was a joint collaboration between QUT Foundry and QUT Library was a great avenue to see our library colleagues showcasing and selling their beautiful handmade crafts. It was well attended by both students and staff who definitely had a great time shopping and enjoying the activities.
A big thank you to Teresa and Collection Access Team for help organising the tables!
Anti Poverty Week
We were pleased to be able to assist a group of Master of Social Work Students who ran an event for Anti-Poverty Week as an action-oriented part of their research on the Universal Basic Income. The promotional activities were started on 24th October whilst the main event was held on 27th October in E Block Function. It included “Life on the Streets” exhibition which was aimed to offer the audience a valuable glimpse into the daily lives and experiences of the homeless in Brisbane. It also featured renowned keynote speakers, who presented variety of topics related to poverty, and how Universal Basic Income has the potential to tackle them.
We provided our support by providing space for them to place their promotional posters near KG Library’s main entrance and by lending our vertical sign stands and whiteboard on wheels for their exhibition. A big thank you to Teresa and Collection Access Team for help organising the sign stands and whiteboards!
Book Donations
A BIG thank you to Sally for her wonderful idea of donating non-fiction books with queer content that had been removed from our general collection for the small library in the Queer Room (near the QUT Guild in C Block). A special thank you also goes to fellow Ally, Tom, to act as a second reviewer of the content for currency and relevance.
The donation was happily accepted by QUT Guild. Julian Trueman, the convenor of the QUT Guild Queer Collective, agreed to look after the handover from the side of the Guild. In consultation with Julian, Sally and Tom decided on a simple insert that explained the older non-fiction books are provided for historical interest.
The donation included children’s books, videos, young adult fiction, and non-fiction.
The Queer Collective welcomes contributions of similar suitable content in future. Library staff are encouraged to channel deselected items of LGBITQ+ interest to Sally at KG Library.

A special thank you to Connor for designing the fabulous Halloween display poster!
Wikipedia Editing Class
It is great to know about the popularity of this class and the commitments from the students who attend it. Kate was delivering this class when the fire evacuation alarm went off on 24th October. On Kate’s return to the Training Room after performing her Warden duties, she found that the students were all back there waiting and even completed some of the activities while waiting!
Wellness
Our team enjoyed a nice get together/ birthday celebration lunch for Bruce and Alice in late October.
Stella (Bruce’s gorgeous pug) has reminded us on the importance of looking after our wellness with her morning walk with Bruce. She was determined to go for the walk despite the rainy weathers! She looks absolutely adorable in her yellow rain coat!
