New Manager Library Services
A very warm welcome to Bruce Munro, our new Manager, Library Service (Kelvin Grove) who has joined us on 30th May!
Bruce comes to us from Southern Cross University Library. He has extensive leadership and management experience within academic libraries (SCU, University of Sydney Library, & UNSW Library), QULOC and CAUL. He was acting in the Director, Library Services role at SCU during 2020 and 2021, and led the three SCU campus libraries through the challenging times of COVID. We are so happy and excited to have Bruce leading our team!
In his leisure times, Bruce enjoys spending quality time with his gorgeous pug, Stella 😊
Thrive/ DINO (Drop In Not Out) Event
Our partners in Disability Services have invited us to join their DINO (Drop In Not Out) event on Tuesday 10th May – 11th May to promote their services. The event took place both on-line and in person.
We participated by having a Library stall in HiQ Activity Room on Tuesday 10th May with Teresa and Ellen representing our team to promote our services to the students, followed by Danielle’s representation via the on-line event on Wednesday 11th May. It was such a great opportunity for the different services to work together and build deeper partnerships and connections between our services. Ultimately the students will benefit from our collaborations. Special thank you to Ellen, Teresa and Danielle for volunteering your time for this event!
ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2022
We were so delighted to have the privilege of hosting the ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime at our beautiful Curriculum Collection space on Wednesday 25th May! The book title this year is “Family Tree”. We had around 35 kindies from C&K Learning Herston Road and School Street attending the event. The wonderful reading and variety of activities that were delivered by our Education students certainly have brighten their day and brought smiles to their faces. A big thank you to Denise Frost, Helen Batchelor, Jenny Clouston, Mimy for organising the event and for Teresa, Narelle, Ishara, Huyen and Marcel for assisting with the set up. Such a great teamwork!
Next Real Venture’s HaptX DK2 Glove System
On 31st May, Danielle, Ellen, fieldwork student James Dillon, Manager Digital Strategy and Collaboration, LTU, visited the Queensland AI Hub in Fortitude Valley.
The Queensland AI Hub extended an invitation to attend the limited, Brisbane exclusive demonstration of Next Real Venture’s HaptX DK2 glove system to the QUT community. James and the Library were included in that invitation, due to our involvement in XR initiatives at QUT. Other QUT guests included VISeR staff and academics and researchers from QUT Gaming Degree programmes.
The DK2 virtual gloves add a ground-breaking and unparalleled level of true-contact haptic touch and force feedback to a vast range of virtual training scenarios, operational designs, and engineering simulations. Easily integrated into existing platforms, the system and be utilised with Extended Reality applications to enhance the user’s experience.
More information about the HaptX Gloves can be found here: https://spaces.hightail.com/space/gAy7dswPzR
Book Donations
We are pleased to be able to contribute to the learning of the young children at C&K QUT Kelvin Grove Community Childcare Centre and C&K Herston Road Community Long Day Care by donating a total of approximately 100 children books to both centres. The centres were very grateful of the donations and the young children are seen enjoying the story readings from the books in the photos below!
A big thank you to Teresa and Phil for organizing the collection that are suitable for this donation.
Installation of 3D Models
We were very excited to show case a wonderful collection of 3D models in the display area on level 2 of KG Library on 19th May. The collection has certainly added vibrancy to the space.
Our special thank you goes to Andy Yeh, our Academic partner from Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice for lending us this collection to help promoting interests around 3D printing projects.
Off-air Weeding Project
Congratulations and a huge thank you to both Ellen and Zach for completing the weeding off-air recordings on DVD in KG Library’s general collection in Semester 1!
Off-air recordings on DVD are easily identified by their packaging and were recorded from free-to-air TV by QUT AV Services, at the request of library staff. In recent years, EduTV and TV News have increased their database of content and we have taken out a subscription to ClickView, from which we can access streaming broadcast content and Foxtel.
In about 90% of cases, both Ellen and Zach have found that the content on DVD was already available in one of those services, or an additional platform such as Kanopy.
DVDs remaining on the shelves in similar packaging are those which were format-shifted from existing commercially-produced VHS tapes, under the flexible dealing provision of the Copyright Act. Those DVDs were outside of the scope of this project and will be reviewed as part of Liaison teams’ usual deselection processes.
Book Displays
Our team proudly celebrated and supported the IDAHOBIT Day (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia) on 17th May by going rainbow with our beautiful book display and decorations. A big thank you to Alice and Mimy for putting together the display and decorations!
Thank you to Helen M for putting together our wonderful fashion books collection during the Fashion Week.
A big thank you also to Helen M for showcasing our beautiful Indigenous book collection to celebrate the National Reconciliation Week “Be Brave. Make Change” theme (27th May – 3rd Jun).
Games Disc Relocation
In order to secure our games disc collection, Teresa and CA Team are currently working on removing the games discs from the cases, labelling and filing them in a storage box which will be kept at HiQ. Thank you Phil for doing these works!
The long-term solution is to move to a discless collection with all games available on console. Thank you Ellen for your input and for working with Teresa and CA Team!
Eurovision Morning Tea
Thank you to Cameron for helping Nicole to organise the “Eurovision Morning Tea” at the staff link area for the whole KG Library Team on 12th May. It was a fun morning tea which was well attended by a group of die-hard Eurovision fans!

Program actions also align with our Sustainability Action Plan and QUT Blueprint goals.
Extreme Weather Conditions
Once again our beautiful library and staff spaces have been affected by the heavy rains on 11th May as shown on these photos. Our special thank you to Teresa, Narelle and CA Team for help monitoring the leaks, moving the furniture, placing signages and cordoning off the affected areas. We are also grateful for the great help and support from FM, Cleaning Services and Security Team.
Possum in Residence
We had the pleasure of a special visit from our possum in residence on 12th May! This beautiful creature with its healthy appetite has certainly brighten the day of our team members who had the opportunity to see it in person!
