June 2022

June Snapshot

Some exciting things happened this month – and some sad things too. We said goodbye to both Jean Hing Fay and Denise Frost – respected and long-standing colleagues who will be very missed. Below are some of the other things that happened.

Sector Engagement and External Partnerships

ALIA Queensland

I was invited by ALIA Queensland to re-present the two presentations that I gave at the ALIA National Conference to a meeting of their members at South Bank TAFE on 8 June. It was a great chance to connect with colleagues from other sectors and the work that we are doing to create more inclusive spaces for LGBTIQA+ students and staff, and students with low-sensory needs, was well received.

SAGE / Charles Sturt / QUT Partnership – Indigenous Student Prize

Majella and I met with Dr Elizabeth Tait, Charles Sturt University, to progress the idea of a $5000 prize / bursary for an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander student studying library and information management at CSU. The successful student will do a 10 day internship at QUT Library and the money will go towards offsetting the expenses involved.

Unstacked

I had the pleasure of taking part in a creative scoping workshop – along with Sarah, Alice, Rani, Majella and Steve – led by Elisa Lee, the creator of Unstacked. We are hoping to implement Unstacked to help showcase our collection.  I also met with: Liz Hall Associate Librarian, Academic Engagement, Flinders University to discuss their implementation plans for Unstacked. You can find out more about Unstacked here.

Visit by the Brisbane City Librarian, Sharon Roberts

I had the pleasure of catching up with Sharon at the ALIA Queensland event. As a result she came to visit the Kelvin Grove Library and loved what she saw 🙂

QUT Partnerships and Engagement

Registrar’s Listening Sessions – LGBTIQA+ Staff (Staff Survey Action Planning)

On 3 June (GP) and 9 June (KG) I co-facilitated “listening sessions” with the Registrar, Leanne Harvey, as part of follow-up work stemming from the Staff Survey that happened last year.

I met with:

  • Leigh Burgess, Sustainability Manager as part of planning for Sustainability Week.
  • Matthew Bellgard, Director eResearch,
  • Julie Cook, Director, Oodgeroo Unit
  • Dave Dennis and Megan Duffy – our Digital Business Service Partners.

I attended:

  • TRI Director’s Choice Seminar – Professor Ginny Barbour was the guest presenter
  • QUT Commercialisation Club
  • Launch of the QUT Indigenous Australian Research Strategy

Staffing News

  • Farewell to Jean Hing Fay who retired on 3 June
  • Farewell to Denise Frost who retired on 1 June

What can be said here? Both staff were farewelled by their teams in very different styles. At her request Denise’s farewell was low-key and heart-felt. Jean was farewelled by her team with a suitably nautical theme and accompanying sea-faring speeches. Both sound like they have fabulous adventures ahead. They will both be very missed at QUT.

Service News

Copyright

A decision was released on the Copyright Agency Limited / Universities Australia copyright matter before the Copyright Tribunal at the beginning of the month. The decision was not the outcome Universities Australia had hoped for they are looking at the judgement in detail and will be communicating with their members. We are waiting on advice on next steps.

QUT Digital Collections in the spotlight

It was great to see the QUT Digital Collection and the great work of Jill Rogers showcased in the QUT News story “Explore Queensland’s History Through the QUT Digital Collections” .
