January ’22
🔦 Highlights
- QUT Theses transfers to OSC this month. Thanks to Jill and Adam for their dedication and care of the service, along with Wing in past years. Adam’s labours are now a teenager – and he is a Success Champion!
- Three Service Visions updated for 2022: Information Resources, QUT Digital Collections, and QUT Readings (Service Visions landing page on SharePoint, here)
- Work From Home: the sequel (spot the kitty!):
🔎 Issues (from last month and emerging)
- Service delivery with staff gaps continues from 2021 (1 less RL, and 2 less RAs)
- Slowness of Alma response time: ongoing issue across Australia, frequently reported to Ex Libris – many of our Resource Librarian’s regular tasks now taking significantly longer to perform (eg previously run overnight now taking up to 72 hours). UL escalated to Ex Libris
- A positive issue – Marina was awarded for being a December Success Champion – lots of last minute shopping to expend the LRS Section budget allocation. Thanks Marina!
⛷️ Major Future Activities
- 2022 LRA (Library Resource Allocation) splits – calculating, then adding to Alma once the LRA figure is confirmed
- QUT Readings rollovers and link checking, for semester 1
- Product owners to collect 2021 statistics for inclusion in annual IRC reports.
👐 Indigenous Perspectives
- UQ and JCU jointly take-over the Co-ordinator role for QULOC ISRG
- With the IA Team, Resource Librarian and Indigenous-supporting LLs, working on a Primo View in Library Search to make Indigenous materials more discoverable
- With the Resource Librarian and Indigenous-supporting LLs, investigating the reclassification of Indigenous materials from DDC 398 to DDC 299 following a heads-up from this SCiS article.
Owned Services
📈 Information Resources:
- Alma Rialto ‘marketplace’ implementation kickoff – implementation Feb-Mar. IRC Information Resources Leads are part of the team
- Textbook ordering for Semester 1 2022 underway (349 KG titles; 374 GP titles)
- Realigning (GOBI) monograph order codes with the refreshed faculty structure
- Completed and submitted two annual surveys for CAUL’s Content Procurement office.
📷 QUT Digital Collections:
- The new slide scanner purchased from the US has arrived in LRS and is asset labelled and installed with the new high end camera. Just testing how it all works: 95% there. This will significantly help in turnaround times for scanning of the 35 mm slides. As we haven’t been in the office in Jan this has yet to be done
- Awaiting QUT signatory to the Melbourne Office of Google Arts and Culture platform re: a partnership which will give QUT a great place to showcase our exhibitions/ stories and curated collections for world wide access
- JR will be applying for grants when we have a significant amount of content in Google Arts and Culture. JR successfully completely in Nov 2021 Grant Writing for Digital Collections in Libraries and Museums. We have limited grant options in Australia, but they will be explored – with outside, and US, more likely.
- Four LAs have been assisting over the summer with metadata research for QDC when they are able: Kate T, Jacque, Stephanie J. and David C from GP – many thanks!
- Helen McMahon (LA in Creative Industries KG) is continuing with her STEP program in QDC until mid Feb, one morning a week. Helen is learning about QDC and Google Arts and Culture story/ exhibition writing. This is going really well with a draft story underway for the Google Arts and Culture platform.

QDC – author engagement
(Simon Cleary is writing and researching a book on the Brisbane River. We have Jack Bain’s old B&W albums and the photos are fabulous. QDC shared the albums roughly scanned but will be scanning more over time with descriptions).
A thousand thank-yous for your very generous email and thoughts. These images are absolutely wonderful. In fact more than that. I’ve gone to them a couple of times now – there’s one of a pine shoot from Biarra near Cressbrook Creek that particularly took my eye as being unusual in capturing a logging moment of that time.
I’d very much like to visit and explore. What I might do, if that’s okay, is continue to gather and map out the contours of my current project, and when I have a better sense of it, come back to you.
Once again – thanks, Jill.
Warm regards
Simon Cleary
QDC – Alumni engagement
(QUT Alternative Handbooks)
Yes!!!! Success!!!!!
The Alternative Handbook continued annually until 1995 and they have copies of each year from my initial 1984 publication to then.
It did have something of a legacy after all!
Delighted,
Many thanks
Having said that I do wonder what might have occurred in the mid 90s that led to it being stopped.
Still, 11 years is not a bad run.
💐 💐 💐
Wow!
Thankyou so much
Did you see the cover of 1984 handbook?
If it had the QIT building with the Help sign on it, that’s it.
Amazing that you would still remember and contact me regarding my query.
This will be dealt with at 9am today.
Thankyou very much,
Kind regards,
Kerry Burrows

Old Ipswich Baths ca. 1928
It’s great for the younger generation to see this, I love hearing about it and see the photos. Please keep them coming.
Lost Ipswich | Facebook (233 comments on this post) Fabulous photos!! I did not know that pool existed. That’s great!

Looking over Ipswich from Denmark Hill:
Great photo. We’ve never seen it before. We can see our house! If you look at the dark pole sticking up above up above the roof of the house in the foreground, our place is to the left to the pole in Martin Street, Woodend.
Lost Ipswich | Facebook; Love these old photos. Thank you for sharing

I loved Saturday mornings in town. Because the shops closed first at 11.30 then they extended it until 12pm everybody had to go then or miss out which gave it such atmosphere. Not like now when you can go all weekend and meeting up is prearranged via text messages, whereas we just knew we would see friends and extended family by running into them. Then for the rest of the weekend everybody played cricket or went swimming or went to the pictures. If there was something special on you most likely had been shopping that morning for a new dress or a pair of jeans. Such great times and wonderful memories.
