Accolades
Congratulations and well done to Cameron for receiving a great feedback from Lana Elliott, Lecturer FHEA from School of Public Health & Social Work, for providing a “Getting started with QUT Library Resources and Support” workshop to the latest cohort of students undertaking the Grad Cert in Disease and Infection Control (HZ38).
This is an AusAward program which is run by the School of Public Health and Social Work, with the cohort made up of health professionals, all based in PNG.
The students joined Cameron’s session via Zoom, all located together in a hotel function room in Port Moresby, with a QUT academic over with them to help facilitate.
This is Cameron’s first session with the cohort but Cameron has provided 4 x sessions for cohort 1 in Semester 1 this year.
Cameron has really enjoyed the opportunity and experience supporting this course throughout the year where he has partnered with the Course Coordinator and Unit Coordinators to provide targeted workshops and sees it as a great example of the library having a positive impact on the education of health professionals in lower income countries.
Congratulations and well done to the CIESJ Liaison Librarians who were invited to two (consecutive days) Publishing Workshops at the Design Lab, for receiving a thank you email from Dr Abigail Winter, Centre Project & Administration Officer – QUT Design Lab / Faculty Writing Coach, for the input and contribution to the workshops.
Congratulations and well done to Ellen for receiving some really positive feedback from our ‘Professional Practice Placements’ page. The feedback was from Narola Changkija who will be doing a placement with us in November this year. Some of the comments included:
- There was a friendly and welcoming ‘tone’ as well in the language, which kept me reading
- The links to the key spheres of activity and the strategic priorities helped me understand a little more about how the library functions within the university
- I also appreciated the link to the org. chart, as it gave me a better idea of QUT’s library departments and overall management structure. It also served as a useful example for a recent assignment I did on library organization structures!
- The inclusion of comments by previous students was very encouraging
- Overall, the page clarified for me what QUT offers as a host placement organization
Murri School Day Visit
We were extremely delighted to have the privilege of hosting the Murri School for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s visit on 4th August, which was part of their QUT Kelvin Grove campus visit. The visit was organised by Alisha Britten from the Oodgeroo Unit.
We hosted these school children in our beautiful Curriculum Collection space (total of 40 children from Year 3 and 4), and provided them with fun and educational activities which included story telling, scavenger hunts, exploring our books and puppets collection, colouring, as well as create your own badge activities. The children definitely had a great time and enjoyed all the activities!
A HUGE thank you to Tom for doing a great job in organising the event and delivering the story telling on the day, Kate for assisting Tom on the day, Helen B and Jenny for organising the books and puppets, Catherine and Bruce for making the badges, Teresa for organising the set up, Marcel and Rebecca for doing the set up and reset up, as well as Lara and Nick for helping to pack up after the events. Such an exemplary teamwork!

Paper Maker Event
It was great to see the link space between R and E Block on Level 2 once again being chosen as a venue for the Paper Maker Event on 25th August, which is a joint collaboration between QUT Foundry and QUT Library. The participants, which were a mixture of both students and staff certainly enjoyed the fun of the paper twirling activity. We also had a mini book sale for fundraising for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
New Signages
We have two updated signages installed in our library space area this month:
- Acknowledgement of Traditional Owner
- Entrance to staff area to Collection Access, Office of Scholarly Communication, Open Access Australasia and Information Access area and the two meeting rooms there (R335 and R345). This is to help students to identify it as a Staff Only entrance

Sustainability
Sally went to the planting event at Samford Ecological Research Facility during the Sustainability Week. To remediate the site from previous agricultural use, the group planted about 350 trees to extend remnant rainforest into the adjacent floodplain/riparian zone.
The group also had a tour of the site and learnt a little of it’s history (photo: slab hut was built in 1880s) and heard from various researchers about their work, which includes water movement through the soil, how drought affects forest, improving hives to benefit bees, and measuring wind turbulence to inform fire predictions.
Sally think it was fascinating and highly recommend others to join this activity next year!

Ken Beutel, Executive Director QUT College spent three hours with KG L& R Team to learn about our Enquiry Services as part of his Executive Immersion Program. Thank you to Catherine, Danielle and Zach for spending time with Ken during his program.
