September 2022

What’s been happening at GP? (Emma Nelms)

There was an urgent building closure of V block on the evening of Thursday 21 September with about six hours’ notice. We let everyone in the building know, arranged for signage on our RFID self-loan kiosks and returns shelf as these would have to manually restarted the next day, arranged for building notifications, updated the website, alerted security that the doors must be available for 24 hours opening afterwards and alerted the law library that some students might be studying there that evening. Security managed the emptying of the building – as it was a little earlier than anticipated but everything seemed to run smoothly.

Gardens Point librarians Michael Hawks, Brendan Sinnamon and Annette Sondergeld were part of Pause for Support – an expo of students’ services brought together by Disability Services, armed with laptop & badge maker.

The Gardens Point level 7 bathroom renovation is finally complete and looking modern and splendid, putting an end to the V block bathroom fitness challenge requiring staff to travel to level 5 and back (or further if cleaners were visiting).

Also starting in September were Dr Anju Tom (machine learning and RF signals) and Dr Abdullah Nazib (onboard AI for hyperspectral satellite image analysis). Both these research fellows work with Prof Clinton Fookes in School of EER.

Learning and Teaching Support

  • Ann-Maree attended first drop-in session for DYB114 student. First year unit in ABE. 10 students turned up looking for help with their assignment. Worked in conjunction with Emma Caukhill from SSG.  Drop-ins will run in Week 8, 9 and 10.
  • VRES expressions of interests are sadly low which is likely a reflection of robust employer demand for engineering skills and the extent of summer WIL internships on offer.
  • VRES LibGuide was updated with FoE specific information.
  • Engineers Australia (EA) course accreditation panel visit will include liaison librarians in the scheduled informal chat session with FoE technical staff over morning tea on Fri 7 Oct.
  • Graham authored a section on library support and resources for engineering programmes for the EA panel earlier in the year.
  • Concerningly, no identifiable STEM related offerings were approved for the first tranche of the QUT You initiative.
  • Engineering LLs met with Sarah Howard to catch up with her conversion with Karen Whelan.  Pressbooks and resources for teaching technical report writing were discussed.

Faculty News and Developments

  • Associate Professor Jonathan Bunker (School of Civil and Environmental Engineering) has been appointed as the faculty’s Director of Postgraduate Studies.
