2022 CAUL Enabling a Modern Curriculum Conference

QUT Library was well represented at the 2022 CAUL Enabling a Modern Curriculum Conference, with six conference abstracts accepted.  Congratulations and well done to Ellen, Rosie and Cameron! Congratulations also to Ginny, Catherine R (with co-authors Stephanie Jacobs and Alice) and Lyndelle from OSC.

Indigenous Literacy Foundation Book Sale

Thank you to Teresa, Cameron MacLeod and both KG and GP CA Teams for organizing the collection offered at the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Book Sale. The exciting event was held from 11am – 3pm on Friday 22nd July Old Government House, Gardens Point. Visitors could explore books, CDs and DVDs on art, architecture, psychology, history, politics, design and more in this occasion. The fund raised is used to support the publishing of books written by communities, for communities, in languages of their choice.

It was a collaborative project between QUT Galleries and Museums, QUT Library and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Three Minute Thesis Competition

Congratulations and well done to Sally for being asked by Health Faculty to lead the panel to judge the Three Minute Thesis competition on 20th July! This is an annual research communication competition designed to cultivate HDR students’ academic, presentation and research communication skills. In this event, Sally was joined by two of the winners from last year. There were 10 participants from across the Health Schools.  It was a very close competition, but the judges chose Melody Dobrinin for her talk on the gut’s microbiome “Small Things Make a Big Difference”.

Melody now progresses to the QUT Grand Final on 15th September at 11:30am via zoom.

Industrial Design Collection Move

A very big THANK YOU to KG and GP CA Team who did all the hard work to backfile the current collection on level 4 so we could integrate the Industrial Design collection onto the KG shelves. It was a big effort!

No doubt the Industrial Design staff and students are delighted to find their books on the shelves at KG Library!

Staff Movements

  • Following a recent EOI process, for the fixed-term, full-time Liaison Librarian position within the CIESJ Liaison Team – Gillian Harrison’s position following her retirement – Stephanie Jacobs has been appointed. Stephanie job-shares the position with Tom Mullins from 1st July – 9th September. From 10th September until 31st December, Stephanie will be working for this position on a full-time basis. A warm welcome back to the KG team to Stephanie and congratulations to both her and Tom on their new LL roles!
  • We also had a great pleasure of welcoming Kate Harbison, our wonderful LL colleague and Wellness Ambassador back to our team. Kate is back-filling Denise’s LL role within the CIESJ Team from 11th July – 18th September. A warm welcome to Kate!
  • A massive thank you to both Alice and Ellen for the assisting with the Education Faculty email enquiries during the transition and for help inducting Stephanie, Tom and Kate in their new roles/ faculty.
  • Congratulations to Helen D for being the successful candidate from the EOI to backfill Janet Baker’s position within the Business and Law Liaison team while Janet is on leave from 1st July – 1st November.
  • In CA Team, we had the great pleasure of welcoming Cameron Deegan back as a Collection Access Assistant to backfill Marth’s position while she is on extended leave starting from next Monday 11 July to 18 November. Cameron did his Vocational Placement in CA Team from August until November last year as part of his study in Certificate III in Library and Information Services at TAFE.

Filming at Curriculum Collection

It is wonderful to see that our beautiful Curriculum Collection space is very much appreciated by our library partners. Marketing and Communication has once again chosen this space to do a promotional filming activity on 14th July, where they interviewed a Master of Teaching student.

QUT Open Day

As part of the QUT Open Day on 31st July, students were taken for a tour to look at the education curriculum resources collection in KG Library, led by Student Ambassadors. The tour was offered twice on the day, 10 – 10.20am and 12.30 – 12.50pm.

Physics Society Promotional Activity Event

We had received a nice thank you note from Jayden Bryant, a student from the Physic Society for lending our badge maker for their club to use during the O Week. As a token of gratitude, Jayden has helped handing out QUT Library badges, promoting our services as well as our 24/7 access.

Green Impact Program

Thank you to Alice, our Green Impact Challenge team members for presenting two great challenges as part of the QUT Green Impact Challenge at the Library Staff Update on 28th July. In this occasion, Alice and Donna from LRS invited our library colleagues to get behind these two great challenges:

HDR Meet, Greet and Eat (organised by OSC)

Thank you to Teresa and CA team for helping out OSC to do a wonderful set up for the HDR Meet, Greet and Eat event on 12th July, which was a successful and well attended one.

Book Displays

Well done and thank you to Alice, Helen M and Zach for organizing wonderful book collections for both NAIDOC and Love Learning Weeks.

Screen Dance Workshop

On 27th July, we had the pleasure of welcoming around 15 students from Screen Dance unit (lecturer: Steph Hutchison). The group was accompanied by Jacob, a Sessional Academic. During this workshop, library dance books were spread around the space for the dance students to engage with. The students were encouraged to think about how the books and space made them think and feel, what interested them, how their bodies felt/engaged with the content, what sparked their imagination or made them curious, how is the resource designed, what kind of language does the artist/s use to share their practice, why did they choose to engage with a particular resource. Students spent some time exploring movements and did some recordings. They then sat and discussed what they discovered as a group.

Well done and thank you to Alice for organising the workshop, to Zach for preparing the books and to Tom and Helen B for meeting and helping with the group on the day! A big thank you to Teresa and Collection Access team for organising the set up for this workshop.

Screen Dance Video

Non-School Leavers Library 101 and Tour 

At the request of the Future Students Group, KG Library participated in their targeted ‘non-school leaver’ orientation program by delivering a Library 101 session and Library Tour on 6th July. The sessions and tours were delivered simultaneously in both online and face-to-face formats and had approximately 15 attendees at each of the sessions. We look forward to working with the Future Students Group to deliver similar programs in the future.

Enquiry Services Reporting

A huge thank you to both Joanna and Danielle who have been working together to compile key data on Semester 1 student workshop attendance. The focus of the reports will be on what faculties, and courses, students are involved with when they attend the Generic Program workshops. These reports are intended to be shared with the Liaison teams and affiliated faculties to foster better understanding of student needs and allow the Library to better plan, target, and promote, our enquiry services.

O Week Library Tour

Both KG and GP LAs ran Library Tours as part of our Generic Program activities during Orientation week.

Both tours were well attended with 15 attending the KG Library Tour and 31 at GP. The students really appreciated the range of spaces and services available to them and are excited to get started with study in Semester 2.

On the Horizon

We have been requested to be part Murri School Children’s Day Campus visit on 4th August . This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the day with the allocated time to be 11:20am-12:05 for a workshop/activity to be held in the Curriculum Collection.
